In this class, Frankie will be discussing ancient burial practices in Israel from the Chalcolithic period (4800-3200 BCE) until much more recent times. We will be looking at ancient sarcophagi (coffins) and ossuaries (bone boxes), many adorned with intricately carved decorations. We will be reading Biblical texts about the burials of the Patriarchs, Matriarchs, Moses, and Aaron, and looking at their cenotaphs (memorials), and taking a “virtual tour” of several types of burial caves and monuments in the Jerusalem area and elsewhere around Israel.
