Inspiring Community: Midor L’dor Brings Together Children & Seniors

 Shining Faces for Senior ‘Buddies’

When I arrived in Richmond over a year ago, I found the Weinstein JCC and its senior programs as soon as possible. My first experiences included lunches with preschoolers who would chat and play games with us – and we so enjoyed seeing them grow over the course of the year! Then I was introduced to RTA’s Midor L’dor program, which pairs seniors with children for fun activities.

This program has been delightful and inspiring for many reasons. The RTA students participating are so impressive with their learning and knowledge. They share so joyfully and spiritedly!  And they always entertain us – their senior ‘buddies’ – with singing, playing games and often sharing stories about family and school.

But more than that, for me – whose grandchildren and great grandchildren live in Israel – the Impact Grant’s Midor L’dor program provides an opportunity to spend time with, and actually befriend, children whom I otherwise would not have met.

It is very precious for me to now have two special friends in RTA’s 5th grade – girls who always dash over to see me It is very precious for me to now have two special friends in RTA’s 5th grade – girls who always dash over to see me when I’m in shul or anywhere else. We enthusiastically enjoy catching up with one another. Even when last year ended, and we exchanged goodbye hugs, we knew they were really ‘so longs’ – until we would see each other again.

It's another year now, and new groups of RTA students are coming to lunch with us on Tuesdays – a day I look forward to – for the shining faces I will see and for the fun we will have throughout the year.

 Inspiring Generations, Together

People often think that visiting the elderly is such a big mitzvah because it brings joy into their lives. That is certainly true. But what it most wonderful about the Midor L'dor program is that it works both ways. The children come home elated by the experiences their visits inspire. That has certainly been the case with our daughter, Amira, who has been enthralled with the program… and her senior ‘buddies.’ What an amazing program!
